Default n00b

Ok. I'm new to large scale and I'm pulling the trigger on a SS 29. I plan on building it as stock and replace parts as needed. Which from my history with my Slayer and crawlers won't take long. My ? is what items should I NOT go without for my build? Must haves? Not looking to build a racing rig. Just something to beat the living hell out of. Then rebuild. Kinda enjoy wrenching almost as much. Almost.

Are you building a 5t or an SC ?

I can reccomend a few parts, obviously the list will be somewhat biased , but a billet servo saver is a must, and if you are running a B or a T, some axle extenders will give you a much more stable rig.

I would say dogbones, but I would wait until the stockers fail. What you replace them with will depend on if you have a 5t/5b or an SC.

Also look into some limiting straps , and some upgraded servos such as the HiTec or Savox.

Building a Kit, go with a Pro Series bearing kit and a Pro shim Kit.

Going to be a SC. I'm a fan of Hitec but not sure what servos to get. (I know I read it somewhere before on which ones). I have a Spektrum DX3R but plan on dumping that for a Futaba 4PKS. Thanks for the help.

Detroit64,

I would suggest an Aluminium Clutch carrier (HPI is a good cost effective choice) The plastic carrier flexes taking out clutch bell bearings which in turn takes out spur gears.
An outerwears prefilter as an extra safety for the air filter and then after that change things as you get to know your buggy.

I wouldn't start dropping money into it yet until you know what you need.. People will give you long lists of must haves which in reality are "what they want" not what they really need or you may need for that fact.

Good luck with your build

Cheers,

Unless you want to replace your $160 body, I would put the Team Chase Cage and mud guards on. This is the most important thing to save your body...

Those bodies are expensive and take a lot of paint...

Not over kill at all, I have both of those servos in my 5SC and love them.

These items are where my builds usually begin. That is a recipe for a strong truck.

Placed order with DDM. Pretty big order. Wife don't know size of order...yet. I think it'll be worth the "HELL" coming my way to finally have a Baja 5SC. Now the waiting game. Thanks again for the help.

Build is done. Thanks for the help. Big thanks to DDM for getting my order to me quick and a big-o-huge thanks to Fast Eddy's tutorials. Didn't have to use the manual too much. Huge help.
