Looking for suggestions before tearing down..I have a 5B SS with a stroker kit and a pipe,,, as well as some suspension upgrades. I just replaced the pull starter because the ring broke inside it,now it starts again. My issue now is that when you hit the gas it will not go,, I pushed it backwards and it made like a grinding noise and then a clunk and it seemed to want to go so I hit it again and nothing. I pushed it forward and it made a clunking noise again and it took off but was making a whirring noise. When I let off the gas it would not go again and the clutch bell was extremely hot. Has anyone had a similar problem or can tell me a good way to diagnose my problem before I start to tear it down.. Thanks

Sounds like the spring in your clutch is broken...

That's what I was thinking(hoping) too....any feedback on the expensive slipper clutch or the 8000 rpm stock clutch do just as well for general play?

The Slipper and the centrifugal clutch are two different kinds of clutchs and have two different purposes. The slipper is a traction control device used in conjunction with the already installed clutch. If the spring that is broken it will need to be replaced, chances are 1 clutch shoe is gone now so replacement of the whole clutch is necessary. The stock CY clutches are inexpensive, it isn't a bad idea to have a spare one in your kit.

| I would suggest the 61652-17 Vertigo Hex Drive unit which eliminates a future problem of broken pinion gears and myself personally like the lower RPM clutch with the 6000RPM spring. I found when playing on soft or loose terrain the higher RPM was more difficult to control (Less ability to finesse the throttle). Others however love the high RPM clutch. If you are running the stock plastic carrier then it could be a cause of the clutch issue as well and upgrading the HPI HD Carrier is a cost effective alternative. | So the 17T pinion gear is the stock number of teeth,,just an upgrade on shaft size and going to a hex drive? No other mods necessary to install? Shopping list started...DDM is where the stroker kit and pipe came from and I see he is listed as one of your vendors. Last edited by fourspdta77; 01-24-2012 at 01:36 PM. |

Shaft size is the same. The gear rides on a hex shaft retained by a locking but. The 17t is the stock tooth count. No mods necessary, all vertigo parts are compatible with the stock Baja.
