Default does stuff like this break all the time?

well i just got new turnbuckles on after the stock ones broke and wouldn't you know it after just playing around for a few minutes the car did a little jump and rolled a couple times and one of the rear hubs broke, It was only going like 10 mph, is this common, or is because its cold and plastic is brittle when its cold, it's about 34 F today in pa. might have to go with some metal hubs i guess so it doesn't happen again. i do understand this is part of the hobby, but i thought it'd be a little stronger than this, its not a clone either

Usually that sort of thing (the hubs) are not real prone to breaking, but with the cold temperatures, its definitely more likely. The baja is made from thermal plastics, so as the temp gets lower, the plastic becomes more brittle.

Could be the cold. It could also just be the way it landed. You might of hit it at just the right angle to break it.

Personally, I have never broken a stock hub.

Keep in mind that if you go to an alloy hub that it may not break, but the part it is attached to might that otherwise would not of.

I thrash my 5t pretty hard. It has seen everything from high speed rolls to landing tail first from a nasty triple. The only thing that has gone wrong is a crack around wing and roll cage came unsnapped over the plug(oh ya, rear body pins will go through on hard impact). I live in the south, so it must be a temp thing.

thanks crazy horse, i wished i lived in the south it's like 28 degrees here, i think i'm just going to upgrade to metal every time something breaks. that seems like a cool idea any how. Probably have to wait until like May to drive the baja :( in the mean time i can upgrade parts

I feel for you. I left the Buffalo area about 5 years ago. Don't miss it.

I prefer the plastic rear hubs with the aluminum bearing carrier. Otherwise, the bearings get sloppy on the rear wheels.

I broke my first plastic rear hub at dunetoberfest. The car was half going half throttle on flat ground on some green AstroTurf that I laid out for the baja. Or maybe it was the 50-60 foot launches I was doing out of the sand dune bowls.

Cold and plastic do not like each other. The aluminum ones are too heavy IMO.

I shelled out the cash for the aluminum one.I broke 2.My RTR had a broken on during shippment and the other day i bust one in the park with a WINTER roll over. But i will be careful not to go to crazy with aluminum upgrades as the next weakest link will break.I also have rear upper aluminum arms but thats as far as i will go with aluminum.

Have you tried contacting HPI The warranty on the Baja is one of the longest I have seen on a RC. They may replace it for you free of charge. Just explain to them what happened and they may help you out. That way even if you do replace it with an Alloy part at least you will have an extra if they give it to you.

no i have broken a couple

the stock hubs warp quite badly over time ,here have a look in this pic, this 1 is six months old, its out by about 3 degrees

now this is understandable with the amount of torque thats being delivered to this part,

the right 1 seems to be the 1 that breaks

:alarm: you must be very careful not to over tighten the 4 hub bolts as the nuts will pull too far into the plastic , weakening the hub and causing it to eventually break :alarm:

So if you store you Baja in a unheated garage and it gets real cold your plastic will break more easily because of the core temp of the plastic. Maybe dumb ?
