1. Open your .jpg picture, usually windows will default to Microsoft Photo Editor. My other computer uses Paint Shop Pro but it is the same procedure.
2. Click on "Image" on the header bar and then go to "resize" on the menu. See pic below.
Click the image to open in full size.

3. In the resize window change the units to "pixels", check the box that is next to "smooth", and enter a value between 500 and 700 in the "width" box. The "height box will automatically change to maintain the aspect ratio. If the pic is taller than it is wide, then enter your value in the "height" box.
On some programs, you will need to make sure the box marked "maintain aspect ratio" is checked. Now click "OK".
Click the image to open in full size.

4. There you go, click "file" on the header bar and "save as" on the menu if you want to save it under a different name. Doin this keeps the original pic unchanged for later use.
Click the image to open in full size.

I use an online photo gallery called www.smugmug.com There are many other online galleries to choose from as well. If you choose to go with a hosted gallery, smugmug is geared for the more avid photo users and isnt a free service like some others but offers some awesome features.

One of the features of smugmug is that you upload the original size photos and it will allow you to post direct links of the photos in one or more of several different sizes perfectly optimized for the web. Small, medium, large, XL, and original.

Even with the automatic resizer, the user viewing the thread has to download the full size photo. Which can take a while for a large photo or lots of photos.
